After WWII, the main film studio in Japan, Shōwa Eiga, commissioned a series of amateur photographers who were paid a retainer to produce documentary images of postwar Japanese life. These photographers produced a unique legacy of studio-style photographs that are valued by collectors to this day.
Photograph often depict on very specific themes and circumstances. Japanese documentary photography is not only concerned with the crisis in Japan, but also reflects the influence of the Occupation by the United States on postwar Japanese photography.

This led to the creation of the Japan photography boom in this period. The boom was caused by the efforts of the Zoke-ha (; literally "Shot Photography Association") who advocated the use of photography to document and record the social and cultural changes in Japan. Japanese society changed fundamentally after the end of the war, and the Zoke-ha encouraged people to actively and consciously participate in this change and to make records of it.

One of the first such photographers to gain public attention was photographer Utagawa Hiroshige. Utagawa was famous for his prints of the kabuki theatre. In 1950, Utagawa was commissioned by Shōwa Eiga, the main studio in Japan, to photograph the Japanese people and their everyday lives after the end of the war.
In 1958, the Zoke-ha movement was officially set up. Many photographic studios and magazines were founded. The photographs made by this movement gave a large role in defining the aesthetics of Japanese photography in the following decades.
